Introduction

For several months now, the United States has seen a wave of patients with an unregistered disease responding to the same symptoms. EVALI, E-cigarette VAping Lung Injury, has already caused more than 2,000 hospitalizations, 39 of which were fatal. What do these patients have in common ? They all vape. A lack of clear communication, relayed massively by the media, caused a wave of panic on the vaping world, even pushing some vapers to go back to tobacco. Today, the truth is out !

CDC confirms that vitamin E acetate is guilty

Recent CDC laboratory tests on fluid samples taken from the lungs of 29 patients with EVALI from 10 different states all revealed the presence of vitamin E acetate. Vitamin E acetate is an oil, used as an additive in the production of cannabis products to be vaporized, sold illegally.

“This is the first time we’ve detected a potentially hazardous chemical in biological samples of patients with these lung injuries. These results provide direct evidence of the presence of vitamin E acetate within the lung damage.” All the details here

Vitamin E acetate is known for its antioxidant properties and its beneficial effect on cholesterol levels. It’s harmless when taken as capsules to swallow or as oil to apply on the skin. But, it’s extremely dangerous when heated and inhaled with an electronic cigarette.

The CDC will continue to move forward with the investigation with further analysis, but now clearly recommends not using THC-containing products, especially those from informal sources such as friends, family, in-person or online dealers.

And now ?

For more than 10 years, millions of people have managed to quit smoking by vaping e-liquids without any problems. And yet, what happened in the US caused a global psychosis. An unacceptable (directed?) amalgam between vaping in general and the consumption of illicit adulterated products. The result ? Thousands of smokers who’d switched to vaping, got terrified by the media headlines, and decided to go back to smoking. Even though, we know very well that the enemy is burnt tobacco. A true health scandal, which we'll hear about again !

It’s now a matter of restoring confidence and to keep informing the public about the benefits and risks of e-cigarettes. Vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking, it’s proven. As for the 5% left, it’s true that there may not yet be enough hindsight and that there are still some doubts about the long-term effects. This is obviously due to time, considering the novelty of these products, and for the simple reason that researchers cannot ethically ask non-smokers to start vaping. Perhaps in fifty years, the major epidemiological studies will be able to give us answers. But as of today, the major risks generally associated with smoking (cancer, cardiovascular or respiratory diseases), are very reduced or even completely eliminated with vaping. Vapers themselves see the positive effects on their health from the very first days.

This means that, if you are a smoker, vaping, will reduce your risks ! If you are a non-smoker, your lungs need nothing else but air.

Conclusion

The U.S. CDC has just confirmed that vaping in general is not responsible for the wave of lung disease in the United States. Researchers have found vitamin E acetate in 29 samples of the 29 taken from patients in 10 different states. This product is an oil, used as an additive in the production of cannabis products to be vaped, sold illegally. Although harmless to ingest or on the skin, when heated, this oil causes lung damage. The FDA had noticed the presence of this product two months ago but chose to point the finger at vaping in general. Relayed by the world's media, a wave of panic swept the vaping world. With the breakthrough that the CDC has just made, vaping traditional e-liquids is not in question. Vapers can rest assured.
