Many smokers have experienced this : the first puff on a vape is often followed by coughing. A phenomenon that leads some of them to give up vaping immediately. There’re several reasons for this cough.

First, the absence of anaesthetic agents such as those found in combustible cigarettes leads the body to reject them. Logically, we were not designed to inhale steam ! It therefore takes some time for the body to get used to the products in e-liquids. Secondly, perhaps it’s necessary to change the way you vape. You don't vape like you smoke a cigarette. It’s better to start with slow puffs of three to four seconds rather than short, powerful puffs. Propylene glycol (PG), which is used to carry the flavours, can also be a source of irritation. In this case, you should use an e-liquid with a lower PG content and a higher vegetal glycerine (VG) content, or even Vegetol. Another possible factor of coughing : nicotine. Although, not dangerous, it is an irritant. However, to increase chances to quit smoking, a high dose of nicotine is essential. So, it’s important to have suitable equipment with a tight draw (close to the cigarette) and a moderate power. Also consider e-liquids with nicotine salts, less irritating to the throat.
